Friday Five: Cover Love

Posted on | Friday, March 11, 2011 | 17 Comments

Something happens when you spend many hours staring at a computer screen. I'm not talking about the inevitable permanent indentations you leave in your couch; that speaks for itself. (And its tale is a sorry one.)

No. After too much computer time, the room seems dimmer, your eyes get a little blurry, and if what you've been doing for aforementioned Many Hours is editing, you might start seeing red marks and lamentations of suckitude all over the walls. I like to think of it as the Sucking on the Walls. Oooh, OR. The Revising on the walls! Get it? As in, you know, the writing on the...um, never mind.

Anyhow, since nothing cleanses the visual palate like a fabulous cover, I'm posting five (because it's Friday!) drool-worthy covers I've recently(ish) discovered and swooned over.

FIVE DROOL-WORTHY COVERS I'VE RECENTLY(ISH) DISCOVERED:

How much do I love this cover? Let me count the ways! Okay, I won't count, 'cause the Math portion of my brain is already off for the weekend - tie undone, driving to the beach in his Audi convertible and wailing along to some Taylor Swift. But I love how surreal this cover is. It is striking and poetic, graceful and dramatic. In a word, STUNGEOUS. (Aside: I was thinking "gorgeous," but then I started to type "stunning." Guys. I think stungeous is the new "fetch"!)

Y'all know how I love a Sarah Dessen book, right? Also, that I don't use the word "y'all" in real life, except when I'm being obnoxious. So, okay, I use it a lot, BUT BACK TO THE COVER. Even if this wasn't a Sarah Dessen book, I'd totally pick it up. And yet, it couldn't not be a Sarah Dessen book.  Most of her book covers (especially recent) seem to follow this "theme." They are bright and - I'll say it - girly, and usually feature a faceless character. The pale, soft color feels open to me, makes the book seem inviting. But, um, I have double-vision at the moment and might have just spent twenty minutes debating whether to capitalize a word, so take that with a grain of salt.

There's something very romantic and atmospheric about this cover. It is quiet, but sweet. And if we were playing a word association game, I'd drop words like "wisftul" and "yearning," though I couldn't tell you why. Sources (they pass the People mag clearance test, don't worry) inform me that the book is set in Ireland, and you can totally tell. Plus, I know this is controversial, but I'm a fan of faceless covers. I like leaving it up to the imagination. To summ: I want this book.

I thought the cover of Paranormalcy was fabulous, and I might like this one even more. I love the color scheme, the fact that it's easily recognizable as the follow-up to Paranormalcy. And, on a superficial but serious note, any cover that makes me think "wind machine" is a winner in my book.

Another sequel to a fabulously cover-endowed First Book In The Series. I loved the cover of Heist Society so much that I couldn't imagine Uncommon Criminals topping it, but I adore this one. Eye-catching colors. Mysterious. Fun. Recognizable as part of the same series. All around WIN.

Okay, so technically, this is six. But technically, this cover is fantastic. A total eye-catcher, but sad at the same time, especially because the zombie is his brother.

Have you seen any superb stungeous covers lately? Happy Friday, everyone! :)

I love the Dessen one. And Jenny's book- well, that one goes without saying. I think I need the dress and books on the cover. And while we're at it, a trip to Ireland wouldn't be so bad either.

These are so great! That first one is so DIFFERENT. I would totally snatch that off a shelf. That is most definitely my favorite Jenny B. Jones cover too. I feel like that cover is a better representation of how good her books are inside. (But I'm not typically a fan of face covers either ... so that's probably just a personal thing :) This is way girly - but that Sarah Dessen cover makes me which I had a rear. And not just, like, a flat abyss where a rear should be. I love looking at book covers. (Can't wait to see YOURS!)

I like the faceless covers too. The mystery of them makes me want to open the book right away.

lovelovelove all of these covers! you've got very good choice in cover aesthetics, m'dear. (that was me going all word-association on you.)
seriously, though, they're all so different and all so purrty. have you checked out the covers for Hereafter and Hereafter?. Stungeous covers, aren't they?
Anyway, I'll shut up now. I get really excited when it comes to covers, heh.

Once again, you have proven you have excellent taste in covers. Also, I *happen* to have ARCs for a few of these. Let me know if you want. I'll hook you up. ;)

All of these are winners, but Imaginary Girls totally sucks me in, like I'm about to enter another dimension or something.
Thanks for the cover love and word coinage. Always a treat.

OMG, Imaginary Girls is fan-freaking-tastic! I love it. And you're right, Supernaturally is clearly "in the Paranormalcy fam", which is great.

How about All These Lives? Got a cover yet? ;) Can't wait...

Katie: I'm with you! I'd totally take the dress and the trip to Ireland.

Natalie: Heh, I've never thought that about the Sarah Dessen cover, but now I'm totally thinking it. ;-) And I agree - hands down the best Jenny cover so far.

Liza: I agree! I love being able to imagine the characters for myself.

Aleeza: Thanks for the links. The Hereafter cover is to die for! Stungeous! :)

Kelly: My favorite thing about the covers (other than them being all prettiful) is that they totally make me want to read the book.

Kristin: I thought that about the font, too!

Shannon: Heh, I like to think my taste in covers vastly superior to my taste in music? Which doesn't mean much, but STILL. And oooh, ARCs?

Tricia: Thanks for always reading! I agree; the IG cover is otherwordly. ;)

Jeanmarie: No cover yet. I'll definitely share as soon as I do/can! :)

Icy Roses: I know, right? I love beautiful covers.

    LMJ: Agreed! ;)

YES to the faceless covers. I usually much prefer them, though the Paranormalcy and Supernaturally covers definitely prove me wrong that it has to be faceless - I love those.

I also like the Hex Hall and Demonglass covers by my agentmate Rachel Hawkins (they have a face, but I LOVE it) and Hourglass by Myra McEntire too. The cover thing is so fun and interesting and are you nervous about seeing yours for the first time??

Sarah, stop trying to make "stungeous" happen. It's not going to happen!

Just had to say that. :) Also, I cannot wait to read every single one of these books!

Serenity: Hourglass is another one that recently caught my eye. So intriguing! And YES. I am totally nervous. :)

Hannah: HOW did I know you were going to say that? :P

All of these are fantastic, but Imaginary Girls...wow. That one just blew me away when I saw it. The amazing thing is the book itself actually lives up to that cover. I was blown away by it. I'll definitely have to look the others up!
